Forrest Gump Review Essay Example Forrest Gump Review Paper Forrest Gump Review Paper Forrest Gump Review In the historically fictional film, Forrest Gump, underlying themes arise through the life story of an innocent soul. Critics describe the film to be a magical story of a hero, while other critics describe the film to be idiotic and insulting. Although critics downplay on the way the Gump’s story is told, I believe that the underlying messages of the story itself should be the main focus. Critics overlook the overall messages of the film, yet these messages are of great importance to the viewer. Themes brought out by Forrest Gump include (and are not limited to) love, history, and life itself and it is essential for the viewer to capture these messages because every viewer can relate to Gump in one way or another. After the underlying messages have been evaluated, then shall the evaluation occur of whether the actors and directors of the film have done their job of relaying their message to the viewer. The story of Forrest Gump begins with a mother’s unconditional love for her son. Being the mother of a handicap and mentally retarded child, Forrest Gump’s mother proves her motherly love by going out of her way to give Gump everything she could as a mother. Right then and there, the theme of love is exemplified. As the story progresses, love is again demonstrated through Gump’s relationship with Jenny, yet in a different way. Gump’s first encounter with Jenny was an innocent love – a love she had towards Gump as a person, and not necessarily a lover just yet. : After growing up and going their separate ways, they both eventually find their ways back to each other, and this time a lover’s type of love took place. Later on in the film, Gump finds another type of love – a love for his own child. Through many instances in the story, love is illustrated through Forrest Gump himself and as well as through Gump’s family, relationships, and even through the love of doing what he wanted/felt. According to the critic Hal Hinson from the Washington Post, he believes that Gump’s â€Å"existence is almost completely dictated by happenstance and dumb luck. I completely disagree. Through the entire film, love is an underlying theme and I believe that Forrest Gump’s existence is dictated not by happenstance and dumb luck, but indeed love. Throughout the film, historical figures and events manifest their way into Gump’s story. Figures such as Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy make their appearance in the film as we ll as events such as the Vietnam War and the Woodstock era. Although the directors of the film twist the truth on how history came about in the film, the theme of history remains underlined. Even the theme of history is a combination of many themes in itself and critic Stuart Klawans from The Nation names â€Å"war, racism, child abuse, poverty, political murder, death by aids† as a few subjects to fit under that umbrella. Hal Hinson, critic from the Washington Post, believes that these historical figures and events occurring in the film are â€Å"just there, dropped in to mark the passage of time†¦Ã¢â‚¬  However, I believe Forrest Gump, as a character in the film, is used as a tool to touch on these touchy subjects. In reality, these subjects are taken very seriously, and I believe Gump is used as a tool in the film to expose to the viewer these subjects in a form of comic relief. I agree with Aeon J. Skoble, critic from The Freeman, who mentions that the film â€Å"strikes the right balance between serious drama and light comedy. † With every serious event in the movie, Forrest Gump provides an ease to the film’s reality, and even an ease to the viewer’s reality of history. Every viewer is affected by the history of America, and that is why the theme of history is vital in the film. Life is such an important theme through the entire film. The story itself is about one’s entire life. The romance in the film relates to life. Historical figures and events relate to life. And because life is an underlying theme in the film, even the viewers’ lives relate to the story. The infamous quote from this very film – â€Å"life is a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get† – obviously relates back to life. Life as a theme in the story is so important because life in reality is important to not only the viewer, but also to everyone. To put it in a simple way – that’s life. Three themes underlined throughout the film include love, history, and life. Although those are the only three mentioned, there are plenty more themes incorporated in the film. Now, the question of whether the directors and actors did their job in relaying the message back to the viewer has occurred. I believe that they did their job, and they did it well. As a drama/romance story with a twist of American history, I believe that the underlined messages were clear to the viewer. Critic, Robert Ebert, says â€Å"the movie is ingenious in taking Forrest on his tour of recent American history† and I completely agree. They did a good job in using Gump as a tool to touch on those touchy subjects, as Tom Hanks â€Å"may be the only actor who could have played that role. † They did an exceptional job because if the viewer cannot relate to one thing, he/she is able to relate to another thing in the film – whether it is regarding romance, family, friends, popular culture, etc. With that being said, Forrest Gump is an outstanding film that uses the main character as a tool to underline significant life-meaning messages for the viewer to easily capture yet remaining entertained.

Military Ranks, Units and Weapons Military Ranks, Units and Weapons Military Ranks, Units and Weapons By Mark Nichol Even the best and most popular authors get facts wrong sometimes (often because they leave research to others and don’t vet it, or are careless in their own investigations), but that’s no excuse for shoddy writing that contradicts what a large segment of the readership knows to be true. One area that’s a minefield, so to speak, for writers is the military. It’s easy to find detailed information about military ranks, units, and weaponry, not to mention history, but here’s some basic training: Military Rank Various nations follow differing conventions of nomenclature for military ranks, which specify an individual’s place in the military hierarchy. Charts that compare various military ranks among and within countries abound in print and online, but the major distinction is between commissioned officers, noncommissioned officers, and enlisted personnel. The first category is for personnel, often college graduates, who command units of various sizes depending on seniority. Noncoms are experienced enlisted personnel who supervise smaller groups of lower-ranking personnel. The term captain is a common point of confusion. A captain (the word is from the Latin for â€Å"head†) originally led a company of soldiers of indeterminate size. In modern armies, marine units, and air forces, captains are relatively low-ranking officers probably in their late 20s or early 30s. Naval captains, however, for reasons I won’t detail here, are much higher in equivalent seniority and usually much older. Furthermore, the commanding officer of most vessels is, by tradition, called the captain, though they may not hold that specific rank. In books, films, and television programs, the creators often stretch the bounds of probability as far as rank is concerned. In the original Star Trek TV series, for example, Captain Kirk was very young to be commanding a starship, though the 2009 big-screen reboot gives a plausible explanation for his precocious promotion. (Well, as plausible as anything is concerned when the subject is Star Trek.) By contrast, Brad Pitt’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s World War II action flick Inglourious Basterds [sic] is a mere army lieutenant. People who hold that beginner’s rank are likely to be in their early to mid-20s, but Pitt is old enough to be a lieutenant’s father. Military-style ranks are used in American police and fire departments. In large cities, a captain is a fairly high rank (while lieutenants are fairly common, especially among detectives), but in smaller departments, the chief may hold the rank of captain, and there may be only one lieutenant, or up to several. Similarly, a captain or a lieutenant heads up a fire company, which may consist of only a few firefighters, but a small-town fire department with a single station may be headed by a captain. Military Units You’ve seen it before: a book or movie synopsis that goes something like â€Å"A tough sergeant leads a platoon of commandos behind enemy lines . . . .† The military has a very specific organizational structure, and a platoon, which consists of several dozen soldiers, is never led by a sergeant, who in combat would be responsible for no more than a dozen or so men. As it turns out, the story’s commando unit consists of eight guys. There’s no military unit ordinarily consisting of eight soldiers, but an ad hoc assemblage could informally be called a squad. But if it’s on a special mission, even a mere eight-man unit would likely be led not by a sergeant but by a fairly junior officer, like Tom Hanks’s Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan (who is assisted by a sergeant, who would take charge if his commanding officer were killed or incapacitated). Military Weapons Plenty of derision has been aimed over the years at war and cop movies and westerns, and at genre fiction, in which the hero’s magic gun never runs out of bullets, but it still happens. (I was annoyed too, while watching an already annoying fantasy film, when a character ambled through a crowded market square with an uncovered double-bladed battle-ax strapped to his back. All he had to do was inadvertently back into somebody to perform an instant nose-ectomy.) Follow the Drill Details like these may seem trivial to civilians, but they’re distracting to millions of service members and veterans, and many others, who know a sergeant major from a major general, a division from a detachment, and a Luger from a Ruger. Their queer behaviors will tend to increase when they are in rows rather than around tables. To make sure that all students are monitored, clustering of students should be avoided. This ensures that there is enough space for every student and there is no opportunity for the misconduct of students. The students therefore will be serious and of course learn more in spacious classes (Victorian Institute of Teaching, nd). Other physical aspects that determine the process of learning include climate, noise, and color. Extreme temperatures negatively affect the quality of learning (Victorian Institute of Teaching, nd). Hurricanes will also have their part to play. Many other disastrous weather conditions affect learning negatively. The student will spend more time fighting with the disasters than in their studies. Poor weather reduces the level of concentration (Smith, 2010). Noise disrupts the whole process of teaching and learning. Too much noise leads to the impairment of the cognitive function. Most reading and studying problems are associated with noise. Furthermore it is difficult for a student to hear what the teacher is saying if there is a lot of noise in the environment. Likewise color affects the efficiency and motivation in learning. Choice of colors depends primarily on the learners’ age and gender. Brighter colors go well with young children and adolescents will be attracted by subdued colors. Males feel at peace with brighter colors but females would like softer colors. Careful considerations should therefore be made when furnishing classrooms to avoid negative influences (Victorian Institute of Teaching, nd). The Cultural Environment Individuals are from different cultural backgrounds. The styles of learning differ from one culture to another. In the developing worlds like Asia and Africa, teachers, mentors and parents insist on the observation of strict discipline in the process of teaching and learning. Children are not given time to air their views. In contrast, in developed countries like US, learning is less controlled and children are allowed to actively participate in learning and teaching processes. This may go a long way to motivating students for better performance. Restrictions on the other hand will make students hate the whole process of learning and teaching (Smith, 2010). The learning process is also affected by the nature of the cultural environment. Some cultures may have a special respect when it comes to knowledge acquisition. People who are learned are greatly respected. These people become mentors to the learner and boost their morale. For example, if a child grows up admiring a certain engineer, chances are that he or she will learn more to become that engineer. Additionally, in the developed countries almost everyone is educated. They also have better resources such as equipped libraries and internet facilities. Their children therefore receive information they require in learning from diverse areas. The more the resources, the more simplified the learning process will be. On the other hand, inadequate resources will always pose a threat to the learning process. In addition, poor countries have a high number of uneducated people and thus do not act as motivators to learning (Smith, 2010). Some cultures also may influence learning by holding a special position in a particular area of study. For along time, there have been talks on mathematics, sciences and languages. Certain cultural backgrounds may fail to put weight on the study of language such as in Myanmar. Some tribes here have no records of their written language. Students from such localities are restricted by their cultural environment to learn the language. They will only have few language experiences. Other cultures will put more emphasis on subjects like mathematics. Learning mathematics for students from these environments will not be a difficult task. The cultural environment therefore dictates what is to be learnt and to what extent (Catherine, 2010). Classroom Setting There are different classroom settings all of which affect the process of learning. Learners tend to perceive various settings differently. For instance, in comparing the traditional classroom teaching with online learning, traditional though passed by time, provides the best setting. Online learning does not monitor the learner’s move. Learning therefore is at the mercy of the learner’s self discipline. More so, there is no reinforcement offered by online learning and there is no educator-recipient direct interaction. In traditional classroom environment, the learner’s moves are closely monitored, there is teacher-student contact and therefore reinforcement is guaranteed. The teacher is in a position to learn the psychological weakness of a student. Once the problem is known, the student can be helped out. Students of the traditional setting will always perform better academically than online students. The learning process is therefore affected by the kind of setting selected (Smith, 2010).

Mansfield Park This novel, originally published in 1814, is the first of Jane Austen's novels not to be a revised version of one of her pre-1800 writings. Mansfield Park has sometimes been considered atypical of Jane Austen, as being solemn and moralistic, especially when contrasted with the immediately preceding Pride and Prejudice and the immediately following Emma. Poor Fanny Price is brought up at Mansfield Park with her rich uncle and aunt, where only her cousin Edmund helps her with the difficulties she suffers from the rest of the family, and from her own fearfulness and timidity. When the sophisticated Crawfords (Henry and Mary), visit the Mansfield neighbourhood, the moral sense of each marriageable member of the Mansfield family is tested in various ways, but Fanny emerges more or less unscathed. Readers have a wide variety of reactions to Mansfield Park-most of which already appear in the Opinions of Mansfield Park collected by Jane Austen herself soon after the novel's publication. Some dislike the character of Fanny as "priggish" (however, it is Edmund who sets the moral tone here), or have no sympathy for her forced inaction (doubtless, those are people who have never lacked confidence, or been without a date on Friday night!). Mansfield Park has also been used to draw connections between the "genteel" rural English society that Jane Austen describes and the outside world, since Fanny's uncle is a slave-owner (with an estate in Antigua in the Caribbean; slavery was not abolished in the British empire until 1833).

Thus, by being active tourists, we had to see and learn much about the numerous species of bamboo, bananas, and mango that are showcased at the park. After enjoying the beauty of the Fruit and Spice Park, we spent the rest of the time sampling and having a taste of the variety of foods and drinks offered at the garden. Here, we ate a well-prepared meal of banana salsa that was served alongside chips, pumpkins, star food, guava, avocados, and jackfruits. This was a very sweet food that not only satisfied us but left us yearning for more. What pleased me most is that the food was prepared using the ingredients from the park thus becoming purely natural. Meanwhile, I was particularly amazed by the Miranda fruit that I tasted at the end of our trip. After hearing about it for so long, I just could not believe that the exotic berry could actually make me taste a sour food as sweet one for up to two hours after its consumption. After leaving the Fruit and Spice Park, we proceeded to Oolite Restaurant and Bar, Lincoln Road, Miami. Here, we had a chance to eat and drink a lot of foods and drinks as well as enjoying the beauty of this great facility.
